Notes Client - Mail (mail template); also Domino Server - Server mail rules
PROBLEM
In the mail rule dialog (Notes client mail rules, and the same dialog used for server mail rules in the Configuration Settings document), once a condition or an action has been added to a rule, it cannot be edited. The only way to change it is to remove it and add a new one from scratch.
In addition, the order in which actions are executed cannot be changed. To get a different order, the user has to remove the actions and add them again in the desired sequence. This is time-consuming and error-prone, especially for:- rules with several conditions (e.g. lists of sender addresses or domains) where only one value needs to be corrected or extended,- rules with several actions (e.g. copy to folder, then move, then send copy), where the execution order matters,- administrators maintaining server mail rules (anti-spam, quarantine, journaling) that are adjusted frequently. Rebuilding a rule also increases the risk of mistakes - a condition or action can easily be forgotten or re-entered incorrectly, and the effect is only visible once mail is processed incorrectly.
PROPOSAL
1. Edit button (or double-click) for an existing condition: open it in the condition editor with its current values (field, operator, value list) and allow saving changes in place.
2. Edit button (or double-click) for an existing action, analogous to conditions (e.g. change the target folder or database, or the forwarding address).
3. "Move up" / "Move down" buttons (or drag and drop) for actions within a rule, so the execution order can be changed without rebuilding the rule.
4. Optionally the same for conditions, to control evaluation order and the readability of complex AND/OR combinations.5. Make the change consistently in the Notes client, Nomad, Verse and the server mail rules dialog in Domino Administrator.
BENEFITS
Much faster maintenance of user and server mail rules.- Fewer configuration errors when adjusting existing rules.- Behaviour consistent with what users expect from other mail clients (Outlook, Thunderbird), where rule conditions and actions can be edited in place.- Easier tuning of server-side anti-spam / quarantine rules by administrators.
