If you leave the selection in the Files of type list untouched as 'ASCII Text', and select a png file, the Files of type list jumps to 'Portable Network Graphic' and imports the file just fine. The problem largely exists between the screen and the keyboard, i.e. the user (me). But I am all for making things explicit and offer guidance to users. lessens mistakes, makes life easier. Even better would be to have the Files of type field be initially blank, reflecting the reality of being able to select any file. But it's a really small feature.
