Domino Server - Mail Routing / SMTP
PROBLEM
Domino currently offers only static anti-spam controls: DNS blacklists/whitelists, SMTP inbound restrictions, server mail rules and client-side junk mail rules. None of these mechanisms learns from the organization's actual mail flow.In practice this means:- Spam sent from legitimate infrastructure (compromised Google Workspace / Microsoft 365 accounts, newsletter platforms) passes SPF, DKIM, DMARC and DNSBL checks and reaches users' inboxes.- Organizations that receive mail indirectly (e.g. via a POP3 connector or an upstream relay) cannot use connection-level checks at all, because Domino only sees the IP address of the internal relay.- Customers have to deploy and maintain a separate gateway (SpamAssassin, rspamd or a commercial appliance) only to get content-based, adaptive filtering, even though all the mail and all user feedback already live in Domino.
PROPOSAL
Add a native, adaptive (Bayesian / statistical) spam classifier to Domino:1. Scoring of inbound messages in the Router/SMTP pipeline (before delivery), with the score written to standard items/headers (e.g. X-Spam-Score, X-Spam-Status), so that existing server mail rules can act on it.2. Configurable actions in the Configuration Settings document: tag subject, deliver to the Junk folder, move to a quarantine database, or reject above a threshold.3. Training from user feedback: "Mark as spam" / "Not spam" actions in Notes, Nomad and Verse that feed the classifier (server-wide token database, optionally per-domain or per-user).4. Admin tools: initial training from existing folders/databases, statistics (true/false positives), reset and export/import of the token database, console commands (e.g. "tell spamfilter stats", "tell spamfilter learn <db> spam|ham").5. Optional: use Domino IQ as an additional classification signal on servers where it is enabled. BENEFITS- Content-based protection against spam and fraud (advance-fee, phishing) that passes all authentication checks.- Works also when mail arrives through a connector or relay, where IP-based checks are not effective.- Uses feedback users already give (moving mail to Junk) instead of discarding it.- Removes the need for an additional filtering gateway for small and medium Domino customers, reducing cost and complexity of the mail infrastructure.- Keeps mail data on-premises - no need to send messages to external filtering services.
